In short

Most homes near the centre of Crewe run a car (80% in the 2021 Census), and the plug-in count across Cheshire East grew by about 46% in the year to June 2026. A home charger must be smart by law, is normally permitted development in England, with new rules from 21 October 2026, and the network operator is notified once it is in. Worked out for a typical Cheshire roof at the pitch and aspect you picked, on a unit rate of 28p and an export rate of 6.5p — rates this tool assumes, dated September 2026, rather than any tariff you have been offered. Nothing here is a quotation: your roof, your shading and how much electricity you use while the sun is up are what the survey settles.

Take the figures with you.

Copy what the studio worked out for your roof, or send it straight to us with a survey request. None of it is a quote: the survey replaces every figure above with your own.

Every assumption behind the numbers
Unit rate
28p for every unit (kWh) you’d otherwise buy from the grid.
Export rate
6.5p for every unit the house and battery can’t use and send back to the grid.
Your yearly use
Worked out from your monthly bill at the 28p unit rate, after a standing charge of about 36p a day — and never less than 1,100 kWh a year.
What a panel makes
Each panel is 440 W (0.44 kWp). A kWp makes 880 kWh a year facing south, 760 facing east–west and 620 facing north-ish. For this part of Cheshire the EU’s PVGIS model gives 951 for a south roof at a typical pitch — the studio stays below it.
Pitch
Shallow (28°) makes 95% of a typical 38° roof; steep (48°) makes 97%.
Shading
A bit of shade costs 10%; heavy shade costs 24%.
How many panels
Two rows, growing with your bill from three columns to eight — six panels up to sixteen.
How much you use yourself
The share of what the roof makes that the house uses: 30% if you’re usually out, 46% in and out, 62% usually home. A battery adds 24 points and a car charger 6, up to 86% — and never more than 62% of your whole year’s use.
Saving
The units you use yourself at 28p, plus the units you export at 6.5p.
Payback
The yearly saving set against what a system like the one you’ve built typically costs to install: a base figure, an amount for each panel, and more again for a battery or a charger. The answer is held between 4 and 25 years. The studio never shows that cost, because only a survey can price your roof — so treat the years as a rough guide, not a figure to hold us to.

Monthly and yearly sunshine for this area: PVGIS 5.2, EU Joint Research Centre. The unit rate, the export rate and the standing charge are the studio’s own assumptions, set in September 2026 — not a tariff we have quoted you. Your own rates are on your bill, and a survey works from those.

Census 2021, around the centre

Crewe’s homes, cars and driveways.

Crewe’s central 12 Census neighbourhoods, counted inside Cheshire East, held 39,215 households in 2021.

  • 80% of households have a car or van43% have one and 37% two or more; 20% have none. Every one of those cars is a candidate for the switch, and the charger is the part that has to be planned.
  • 90% live in a house28% detached, 41% semi-detached and 21% terraced. The Census does not count driveways, but a detached or semi-detached house is where off-street parking, and a home charger, is most likely.
  • 10% live in a flatA flat with its own allocated space can still have a charger, and that is exactly who the government’s chargepoint grant is for.

Electric cars in Cheshire East, and public charging around Crewe.

  • 14,975 privately kept plug-in carsLicensed in Cheshire East at the end of June 2026, up from 10,291 a year earlier, a rise of about 46%. 9,689 of them are fully battery electric; the rest are plug-in hybrids.
  • 160 public chargers in Crewe and NantwichThe parliamentary constituency that takes in Crewe’s centre, on 1 July 2026, against 126 on 1 January; 42 of them are rapid, 50 kW or more.
  • 520 public chargers across Cheshire EastAbout 123 for every 100,000 people. A public charger is for the journey; the charging that sets the running cost happens on the drive, overnight.

  • Summer days can fill a carMay to July make about 37% of a Crewe roof’s year. A solar-aware charger puts that surplus into the car instead of exporting it; Hypervolt’s Eco mode starts at about 1.4 kW of surplus.
  • Winter belongs to the night rateDecember and January make only about 7% of the year, so in winter the charger works the cheap overnight window instead, which is what the smart-charging rules are built around.

Modelled with the JRC’s PVGIS tool, version 5.2. A shaded roof, or one facing east or west, makes less; the roof studio above runs the same model for your own roof and bill. How a charger and the panels share the surplus: charging an EV from your own solar.

The wires

Connecting a charger to the grid in Crewe.

  • A home charger is notified to the network operator. Under the Energy Networks Association’s connect-and-notify process, where the home’s maximum demand stays at 60 amps per phase or less the charger is fitted first and notified within 28 days; above that, the operator is asked first. For Crewe, the operator is on the SP Manweb network.

    energynetworks.org
  • A 22 kW charger needs a three-phase supply and most UK homes are single phase, so a home charger is normally 7 kW or so; Hypervolt publishes its Home 3 Pro at 7.4 kW single phase.

Planning

Planning rules in Crewe for a home charger.

  • In England a wall-mounted charging outlet in an area used for off-street parking is permitted development, as long as the house is not listed and the spot is not a scheduled monument; the old rule keeping it 2 metres back from a road was removed in May 2025.

    GPDO 2015, Schedule 2, Part 2 · SI 2025/560
  • From 21 October 2026 a wall charger can also go anywhere within the curtilage of a house or a block of flats as permitted development: no higher than 1.6 metres, one outlet per curtilage, sticking out no more than 0.2 metres, with 1.5 metres of footway left clear, and with an authorised cross-pavement solution for any cable over a footway. On that new route it is not permitted development in a conservation area.

    SI 2026/1056
  • There are currently 76 Conservation areas within Cheshire East. Cheshire East Council’s page does not place a conservation area in Crewe by name, so check the council’s map for your address. The council publishes an interactive map, "Check if you live in a Conservation area", and the same mapping system shows Article 4 Directions. Article 4 Directions allow the Council to ensure that Conservation areas are suitably protected.

What the law asks of a charger

Smart charging in Crewe: the rules and the tariffs.

  • Since the Electric Vehicles (Smart Charge Points) Regulations 2021, a home charger has to be smart: it comes with default charging hours set outside the weekday peaks (8 to 11 in the morning and 4 to 10 in the evening), the owner can override them, and it applies a random delay of up to ten minutes to each charge.

  • Intelligent Octopus Go is a smart EV tariff: Octopus schedules the car’s charging itself, and the whole home gets the cheap rate for six hours every night, from 23:30 to 05:30. Hypervolt says its Home 3 and Home 3 Pro can use the integration, and Octopus supports Tesla cars directly.

    octopus.energy · blog.hypervolt.co.uk
  • A tethered charger has its cable permanently attached; an untethered one has a socket and you use the car’s own cable. Every Hypervolt charger is tethered. Hypervolt publishes integrated PEN-fault protection on the Home 3 Pro, and lists it for TN-C-S, TN-S and TT earthing; whether a particular house needs anything more is settled on the survey.

Straight answers

When we’d tell you not to, in Crewe.

A survey that ends in “not this house” is a good survey. These are the usual reasons.

  • Nowhere off the street to parkAbout 10% of households around Crewe’s centre lived in a flat in 2021, and many terraces have no drive. A charger needs its own parking space; trailing a cable over a pavement is not something we will do without the authorised cross-pavement solution the new rules require.
  • A looped or shared supplySome older houses share a supply cable with next door. The network operator has to separate it before a charger goes in, and Electricity North West says so in terms; we check the cut-out before quoting.
  • A supply already near its limitUnder connect-and-notify, a home that would go over 60 amps per phase has to ask the network first. Load management usually keeps a charger inside the limit, but if it cannot, the application comes before the install.
  • A conservation-area address on the new routeFrom 21 October 2026 the new route that allows a wall charger anywhere within a home’s curtilage does not apply in a conservation area. Cheshire East’s map shows whether an address is in one.

Costs and help

Paying for a charger in Crewe.

  • The grant, and who it is forThere is no government grant for a charger at a house you own. The EV chargepoint grant is for people who rent, or who own and live in a flat, with private off-street parking: it pays 75% of buying and installing a socket up to a cap set by the government, until 31 March 2027, and only through an installer OZEV has authorised. The detail: EV charger grants in 2026.
  • What sets the price of a chargerThe supply, the length and route of the cable run, the earthing and whether load management is needed. We quote after the check, not before: what goes into the cost of a home EV charger.
  • The overnight rateA smart tariff with a cheap night window does most of the saving; the panels add to it in summer. How Intelligent Octopus Go works with a home charger.

Crewe · questions

EV chargers in Crewe: what people ask.

If yours isn’t here, give us a ring and ask, or see every question.

Usually not. In England a wall charger in an off-street parking space is permitted development unless the house is listed, and from 21 October 2026 the rules widen to any spot on the property up to 1.6 metres high, except in conservation areas on that route; anything outside those rules is for Cheshire East Council.

Yes, the local network operator is told. If the house’s peak demand is within 60 amps on each phase, we fit the charger and send the notice within 28 days; if not, the operator approves it first.

Not for a house you own. Renters, and owner-occupiers of flats who have their own parking space, can apply: it runs to 31 March 2027, pays 75% of the cost up to a cap, and has to be claimed by an OZEV-authorised installer. Our grants guide sets out who qualifies.

Yes, with a solar-aware charger. Hypervolt publishes an Eco mode that puts solar and home-battery energy first and a Super-Eco mode that uses nothing else. A south-facing roof in Crewe makes about 947 kWh a year per kWp, most of it in summer.

Only where the house has three phases coming in, which is rare in British homes. A single-phase charger is normally around 7 kW, and the Hypervolt we fit is a 7.4 kW single-phase unit.

On 1 July 2026 the DfT counted 160 public chargers in the Crewe and Nantwich constituency, 42 of them 50 kW or faster, and 520 across Cheshire East.

24 miles in a straight line from Ellesmere Port. The nearest towns we also cover, Nantwich, Sandbach, Middlewich, have charger pages of their own.
