Battery storage

Tesla Powerwall installerTesla Powerwall.

We install the Tesla Powerwall 3 across Cheshire: Tesla’s home battery with the solar inverter built into the same box, so one unit runs the panels and the storage. Tesla publishes 13.5 kWh per unit and an output of up to 11.04 kW, with a Backup Gateway 2 beside it to hold the house up when the grid drops. It suits a household that wants the storage and the solar side from one manufacturer, on one app.

Tesla Powerwall

What it is, and who it suits.

One box, battery and inverter together

Powerwall 3 carries its own solar inverter: Tesla publishes three solar inputs with MPPTs and a solar-to-grid efficiency of 97.5 %, so a new array and the battery are wired to the same unit rather than to two.

The gateway does the switching

Powerwall 3 is installed with a Backup Gateway 2, which controls the grid connection, monitors what the house is drawing and manages the transition into and out of backup.

Room to add later

Tesla lists up to four Powerwall 3 units and up to three Expansion units, seven in total on one system. An Expansion is battery only: no inverter, no solar connection, and it cannot be fitted without a Powerwall 3 to run it.

Indoors or outdoors

The published enclosure rating is IP55 and the unit is rated for indoor and outdoor installation, floor or wall mounted, from −20 °C to 50 °C. Tesla also publishes flood resistance up to 0.6 m.

What the app does

The Tesla mobile app is the homeowner’s interface. Storm Watch charges the battery to full ahead of forecast severe weather, and the settings can be set so a car charges only from surplus solar.

The electrical side

Powerwall 3 is published as a 230 V single-phase 50 Hz product, with G98, G99 and G100 listed under grid interoperability. Those are the standards the network operator works to when the system is notified.

On the day

What fitting a Tesla Powerwall battery involves.

  • At a published 130 kg, the base or the wall has to be right for it — that is a survey question, not a delivery-day one.
  • A Backup Gateway 2 goes in with it to control the grid connection and manage the switch into backup.
  • Connectivity is Wi-Fi, wired Ethernet or cellular, so monitoring still works where house Wi-Fi does not reach the wall.
  • Under 50 dB(A) typical at one metre is quiet, but it is not silent: siting under a bedroom window is worth a thought.
  • The grid connection is notified to the network operator under G98 or G99 before it goes live.

These are reviews of the installation rather than the hardware — most of them name no brand at all.

We are really pleased with our recent Solar and Battery install and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Electrifyd. Andre was a pleasure to deal with from start to finish. He turned up and was punctual to all our appointments (I'm still waiting for one fella to turn up to do a quote, he was due on the 19th June. He still hasn't been in touch. He's not coming is he?) and took a genuine interest in what we wanted, and my family. There was no pressure, just advice and discussion to find the best solution for our needs and budget.

The install went smoothly with minimal disruption and we haven't taken a pennies worth of electricity from the grid in the 5 days since. Excellent.

Electrifyd installed a powerwall and a load of solar panels on my garage roof. This was a really tidy job with people not even noticing it at first.

They installed all this in one day, even though they had a late start due to a delayed delivery. They were able to do the noisy stuff and turn the power off the night before at my request, so that I was able to work as normal and some guests weren't disturbed.

Quote to install was just under a month, so that I could qualify for a rebate that I'd left to the last minute.

After the export tariff was set up, I basically have no electricity bill (in June), even after the standing charge is included.

Following the initial installation of a full system - PV panels, Inverter, EV charger and Battery - Electrifyd have added two additional battery modules to increase capacity! Again, a prompt, professional service, a satisfied customer and a first class solar system!
