Where we work

Solar panels in the Wirral and MerseysideSolar, batteries and EV chargers across Merseyside and the Wirral.

Merseyside and the Wirral sit across the estuary from the base — Bebington is 4 miles away in a straight line. Wirral lists 26 conservation areas and Liverpool 36, so on a Liverpool or Wirral roof that check comes before the solar panels are designed, not after.

The roof studio

Turn the house, fill the roof.

A Cheshire semi on a turntable. Drag it round, then tell it about your roof and your house — the panels, the battery, the current running through it and the numbers all move together.

Worked out for a typical Cheshire roof at the pitch and aspect you picked, on a unit rate of 28p and an export rate of 6.5p — rates this tool assumes, dated September 2026, rather than any tariff you have been offered. Nothing here is a quotation: your roof, your shading and how much electricity you use while the sun is up are what the survey settles.

Take the figures with you.

Copy what the studio worked out for your roof, or send it straight to us with a survey request. None of it is a quote: the survey replaces every figure above with your own.

Every assumption behind the numbers
Unit rate
28p for every unit (kWh) you’d otherwise buy from the grid.
Export rate
6.5p for every unit the house and battery can’t use and send back to the grid.
Your yearly use
Worked out from your monthly bill at the 28p unit rate, after a standing charge of about 36p a day — and never less than 1,100 kWh a year.
What a panel makes
Each panel is 440 W (0.44 kWp). A kWp makes 880 kWh a year facing south, 760 facing east–west and 620 facing north-ish. For this part of Cheshire the EU’s PVGIS model gives 951 for a south roof at a typical pitch — the studio stays below it.
Pitch
Shallow (28°) makes 95% of a typical 38° roof; steep (48°) makes 97%.
Shading
A bit of shade costs 10%; heavy shade costs 24%.
How many panels
Two rows, growing with your bill from three columns to eight — six panels up to sixteen.
How much you use yourself
The share of what the roof makes that the house uses: 30% if you’re usually out, 46% in and out, 62% usually home. A battery adds 24 points and a car charger 6, up to 86% — and never more than 62% of your whole year’s use.
Saving
The units you use yourself at 28p, plus the units you export at 6.5p.
Payback
The yearly saving set against what a system like the one you’ve built typically costs to install: a base figure, an amount for each panel, and more again for a battery or a charger. The answer is held between 4 and 25 years. The studio never shows that cost, because only a survey can price your roof — so treat the years as a rough guide, not a figure to hold us to.

Monthly and yearly sunshine for this area: PVGIS 5.2, EU Joint Research Centre. The unit rate, the export rate and the standing charge are the studio’s own assumptions, set in September 2026 — not a tariff we have quoted you. Your own rates are on your bill, and a survey works from those.

The wires

Who runs the network here.

Which distribution network you sit on decides who signs off the connection, and on what terms.

  • Every Merseyside and Wirral town on this page — Bebington, Heswall, Birkenhead, Wallasey, West Kirby, Hoylake, Liverpool and St Helens — is inside SP Energy Networks’ SP Manweb licence area.

    spenergynetworks.opendatasoft.com
  • Southport sits on a network edge: the town and its centre are on SP Manweb, but homes on the West Lancashire edge, in Halsall and Scarisbrick parishes, are served by SP Electricity North West.

    spenergynetworks.opendatasoft.com · electricitynorthwest.opendatasoft.com
  • In SP Manweb’s area a single generator under 16A per phase (3.68kW) is notified “before or at the time of commissioning”, and the commissioning confirmation is submitted “within 30 days of commissioning”.

Every install is notified to that operator — how G98 and G99 work.

Planning

What the planning rules say here.

Most domestic solar is permitted development, with conditions. These are the ones that apply here.

  • Rooftop solar on a house in England is permitted development under Part 14, Class A of the GPDO 2015. On the text as amended on 27 August 2026, panels on a pitched roof may protrude no more than 0.2 metres and may not rise above the highest part of the roof, chimneys excluded; on a flat roof the limit is 0.6 metres.

If your roof is listed, flat or in a conservation area, say so on the first call — it changes the design, not the answer. When solar panels need planning permission, and how panels go on a flat roof.

Council schemes

Council solar schemes in Merseyside & Wirral.

A search for solar here turns up council-backed group buys as well as installers. They are run by the councils, not by us — this is how each one works.

  • Solar Together, Liverpool City Region. The Liverpool City Region Combined Authority has run Solar Together for Wirral residents and small businesses: free registration, a reverse auction among pre-approved installers, and panels, battery storage and EV charge points on offer. When Wirral Council announced the round on 27 October 2025, registration was due to close on 17 November, so look for whether a new round is open.

    wirralview.com · solartogether.co.uk
  • Warm Homes Local Grant. Announced in the same Wirral Council round-up: a Combined Authority grant for homeowners whose house is rated EPC D, E, F or G and who are on a lower income, receive means-tested benefits or live in an eligible postcode. A council-approved contractor carries out a retrofit assessment first, and the measures can include solar panels as well as insulation and heat pumps.

Whichever route you take, ask for MCS certification — the Smart Export Guarantee depends on it — and for the network notification to be handled for you. How a direct install runs.

Merseyside & Wirral · questions

What people ask about Merseyside & Wirral.

If yours isn’t here, give us a ring and ask, or see every question.

SP Energy Networks, under its SP Manweb licence — the same operator as our Ellesmere Port base, so a connection works the same way on both banks of the Mersey. One generator below 16A per phase is notified under G98, before or on the day it is switched on, with the commissioning paperwork due within 30 days; anything bigger goes through G99. St Helens is on the same network.

Mostly. Southport’s centre and most of the town are SP Manweb, but the town straddles a licence boundary: a strip of homes in Halsall and Scarisbrick parishes, on the West Lancashire side, is on SP Electricity North West. To be sure for one house, look at the MPAN on the bill — a distributor ID of 13 is SP Manweb, 16 is SP Electricity North West.

Not the roof slope itself: it is not excluded, so panels there can still be permitted development. The limits fall elsewhere — nothing on a wall, balcony or roof enclosure that fronts a highway, and a flat-roof array needs prior approval of its appearance first. Liverpool has 36 conservation areas covering 19,000 properties and warns that an Article 4 direction may apply; Wirral has 26, Port Sunlight and Hamilton Square among them. A listed house needs consent whatever the roof.

Nine miles in a straight line, across the estuary from Ellesmere Port. Bebington is the nearest town on this page at four miles, Birkenhead is nine, and Southport, the furthest, is 25.

One of four. Wirral Council decides for Birkenhead, Wallasey, Bebington, Heswall, West Kirby and Hoylake; Liverpool City Council for Liverpool; St Helens Borough Council for St Helens; and Sefton Council for Southport. Each keeps its own map of conservation areas.

Wirral Council’s October 2025 round-up named two, both run at city-region level. One was a group buy that any resident or small business could join, with installers bidding for the work. The other, a grant, is far narrower: it is for homeowners in a poorly rated house who also meet an income, benefits or postcode test, and the work follows a retrofit assessment. Schemes like these open and close, so check the council’s energy advice pages for what is running now.

The same as anywhere else we work, since nothing about the price is local. It comes from the size of the system and the roof it goes on — slope, direction, shading, and how hard it is to get scaffold up — and from whether a battery or a car charger goes in alongside. To put numbers to your own roof, try the roof studio on our home page with an electricity bill to hand; the survey then settles the design.

What people say after we have been.

We are really pleased with our recent Solar and Battery install and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Electrifyd. Andre was a pleasure to deal with from start to finish. He turned up and was punctual to all our appointments (I'm still waiting for one fella to turn up to do a quote, he was due on the 19th June. He still hasn't been in touch. He's not coming is he?) and took a genuine interest in what we wanted, and my family. There was no pressure, just advice and discussion to find the best solution for our needs and budget.

The install went smoothly with minimal disruption and we haven't taken a pennies worth of electricity from the grid in the 5 days since. Excellent.

Electrify UK have been very professional from the initial meeting to competing the installation, with a personal touch. We would definitely recommend them to all

Graham CollinsGoogle review · July 2026

Andre and his team fitted our solar panels a week ago. They were very friendly and professional, took all the rubbish away afterwards and Andre sat down and explained the app and how the system works in clear understandable language. They worked very hard all day and eventually left at 10pm. Andre advised if there were any questions or problems we are his customers and he would always be at the end of the phone for advise. We highly recommend this company for all your solar energy needs.
